Exploring perspectives on dying alone
I realised, from talking to other people and from the reading that I did, that dying alone was generally considered to be a bad way to die. I wondered about this, because I also gained the impression that people often do die on their own. I decided that this was something which required exploration. So far, I have carried out two research projects on the topic of dying alone.

Time and the end of life
‘When someone dies: experiences and perspectives of bereaved people and professionals’. Funded by the British Academy. November 2019 to March 2021. The aim was to explore experiences and understandings about time of death with people who had been bereaved. It also aimed to explore experiences and understandings about time of death with professionals whose work brought them into contact with either people who are dying or dead bodies.

While exploring the issue of dying alone I came to realise that there are many ways of dying alone, and that some involve high levels of social injustice. Some people, at the fringes of our society, are not treated equitably in either their living or their dying.
